1. Lamb to the slaughter - when a meek housewife ( barbara bel geddes ) learns that her cheating husband is leaving her, she whacks him--fatally--with a frozen leg of lamb. She then calmly calls the police to report that her husband was murdered by an intruder. This darkly amusing tale, written by roald dahl, works to perfection--right down to the killer punch line. It was one of only 17 episodes (of the total 268) directed by hitchcock.

Director jennifer kaytin robinson is returning to netflix for her next directorial effort. Following the breakout success of her first feature, the anthemic breakup tale “ someone great ,” robinson returns with a new project she’ll direct, produce and has co-written, titled “strangers. ”inspired by alfred hitchcock’s “strangers on a train,” the dark comedy will follow unlikely cohorts drew (an alpha, “it” girl) and eleanor (beta, alt girl) who agree to go after one another’s bullies. Co-written with her “sweet/vicious” collaborator celeste ballard, the story features “the scariest protagonists of all: teenage girls,” according to the logline.

The Man Who Knew Too Much

From then on, the great era of hitchcock’s cinema began, the era of the great titles of his filmography, a golden stage of uninterrupted creation that would last practically until the end of his days. The first film he made with the new production company was the man who knew too much ( 1934 ), a work of art of suspense cinema that was chosen by the critics as the film of the year in england.

And one film that’s near-certain to place in the top ten, given that it’s been there in every poll since 1982 (and placed second in 2002) is alfred hitchcock ’s “ vertigo. ” the film was relatively poorly received on release, and indeed, remained unseen for twenty years, one of the five films to which hitchcock bought back the rights to leave to his daughter (the so-called five lost hitchcocks, which also include “the man who knew too much,” “rear window,” “rope” and “the trouble with harry“). Hitchcock signed with gaumont-british in 1934, and his first film for that company, the man who knew too much (1934), was also his first international success. Leslie banks and edna best star as the lawrences, a married couple on vacation in switzerland with their daughter betty (nova pilbeam). They inadvertently become enmeshed in a plot to assassinate a diplomat when the conspirators kidnap betty to ensure the lawrences’ silence until the deed is accomplished by the lethal abbott (german actor peter lorre in his first english-speaking role). In just 75 minutes, culminating with the classic royal albert hall finale, hitchcock established himself as the new master of the sinister.
