The red queen is a character who appears in through the looking-glass but not in the first novel. This unique fictional personage is the antagonist in see full answer below. alice

The red queen (iracebeth of crims) is the main antagonist in the film alice in wonderland (2010 film) and she is the main antagonist turned a main character in its sequel alice through the looking glass. She is based upon the chess piece of the same name and the queen of hearts. The red queen (also known as the bloody big head and the bloody red queen) is played by helena bonham carter in the 2010 film. In the 1985 film she is portrayed by ann jillian.

The white queen in this film is almost different from the way the author lewis carroll originally envisioned her. Originally, she was pictured as "sweet, gentle, fat, and stupid" yet still endowed with a queenly dignity; in short almost like a slightly doddering fairy godmother. In the book she appears in, through the looking-glass, there was no indication she was related to the red queen, although at least one of the pawns in her chess army was her youngest daughter, lily (who did not appear in the disney film).

Overview[ edit ] with a motif of through the looking-glass being a representation of the game of chess , the red queen could be viewed as an antagonist in the story as she is the queen for the side opposing alice. Despite this, their initial encounter is a cordial one, with the red queen explaining the rules of chess concerning promotion —specifically that alice is able to become a queen by starting out as a pawn and reaching the eighth square at the opposite end of the board. As a queen in the game of chess, the red queen is able to move swiftly and effortlessly.

The queen of hearts quotes (1,2) are from lewis carroll’s ‘alice in wonderland’. The red queen quotes (3-5) are from his sequel book ‘through the looking glass’.

Tim burton's alice in wonderland (2010) borrows elements from both of the novels by lewis carroll, but alice through the looking glass (2016) is nothing like his second novel and focuses on the mad hatter's origin as well as the feud between the red queen and the white queen.

Red queen, a. K. A. Iracebeth or iracebeth of crims, is the main villain of the 2010 film alice in wonderland, and a anti-hero of alice through the looking glass.

To help with ideas, atwood consulted a more authentic reference — the illustrations by john tenniel and lewis carroll that accompanied early editions of carroll’s 1865 classic.

Alice Through the Looking Glass

The white queen is a character from lewis carroll's through the looking glass, a sequel to his novel alice's adventures in wonderland. | Both novels have been adapted, and sometimes combined in the process, numerous times, the most recent of which are the tim burton produced films alice in wonderland (2010) and alice: through the looking glass (2016).

“the two alices are not books for children,” virginia woolf wrote in 1939. “they are the only books in which we become children. ” generations of young readers might take issue with the first part of woolf’s statement, but there’s no question that lewis carroll’s alice’s adventures in wonderland and through the looking-glass hold a singular power to send us tumbling down the rabbit hole into the delights and terrors of childhood. That—not to mention the surreal wit and verbal acrobatics—may be the key to their enduring appeal 150 years after the first alice book was published. The anniversary is being marked around the world by museum exhibitions, scholarly conferences, and theatrical productions, most notably wonder. Land (pronounced “wonder-dot-land”), a visually extravagant new musical adaptation opening at london’s national theatre that brings carroll into the internet age. Staged by the national’s protean artistic director, rufus norris—whose recent productions there include david hare’s adaptation of behind the beautiful forevers and everyman, with chiwetel ejiofor—with songs by blur and gorillaz front man damon albarn, it promises to be a heady finale to alice’s birthday bash. “this story—and its characters—is hugely imprinted on our collective cultural memory,” norris says. “it has something very potent, albeit elusive—it slips away like the white rabbit. ”.

A modern adaptation of the classic children's story 'alice through the looking glass', which continued on from the popular 'alice in wonderland' story. This time alice is played by the mother, who falls asleep while reading the the bedtime story to her daughter. Walking through the looking glass, alice finds herself in chessland, a magical and fun world. There she meets the red and white queens, as well as many other amusing friends on her journey across the chessboard countryside onto become a crowned queen.

Along with her husband the white king, she is one of the first characters to be seen in the story. She first appears in the drawing room just beyond the titular looking-glass as an animate chesspiece unable to see or hear alice, the main character. The queen is looking for her daughter lily; alice helps her by lifting the white queen and king onto the table, leading them to believe they were thrown up by an invisible volcano.

In through the looking glass the red queen reveals to alice that the entire countryside is laid out in squares, like a gigantic chessboard, and offers to make alice a queen if she can move all the way to the eighth rank/row in a chess match. This is a direct example of the way the world is set up. If you jump through the hoops you can progress to the top of the food chain. In the world of the occult she is telling alice that she can become a high degree initiate; much like herself.

Queen of Hearts ( Alice's Adventures in Wonderland )

The queen of hearts is a fictional character from the 1865 book alice's adventures in wonderland by lewis carroll. She is a foul-tempered monarch whom carroll himself describes as "a blind fury", and who is quick to give death sentences at the slightest offense. One of her most famous lines is the oft-repeated "off with his/her head!" / "off with their heads!".

Though there are exceptions, the vast majority of aspirational queens of hearts base their look on the nasty queen from alice in wonderland. The queen of hearts was first introduced in alice's adventures in wonderland (now ubiquitously known as alice in wonderland) in 1865, when english author charles lutwidge dodgson published the novel under the now well-known pseudonym lewis carroll.

Confusion with the Red Queen [ edit ]

The white queen appeared in the tim burton's 2010 film, alice in wonderland. Her given name in the film is mirana of marmoreal. She is stated to be the rightful ruler of underland , but her eldest sister iracebeth, the red queen , ursurped and claimed the crown as her own. The film makes no reference to a white king, and as such it is likely this version of the white queen is unmarried and rules alone. It is interesting to note that she is able to complete the potion that allows alice to shrink by spewing in her own "wishful thinking" for the final instillment of the needed ingredient. When she moves, she does so gracefully, giving the illusion that she is perpetually dancing. In tarrant 's flashback, she was at hightopp village when the jabberwock burned it down. She was led out of the village, but lost her crown out of confusion. She is later seen when bayard comes to tell her that alice is at the red queen's castle at salazen grum. She forgives him as alice will also find the vorpal sword. When alice goes to marmoreal on the bandersnatch , she hands over mirana the vorpal sword, which is now with the armor. Since alice is too big, she makes pishsalver with disgusting ingredients. After alice drinks it, she becomes the right size. She is then at the chessboard-like battlefield with her army when she gives iracebeth one more chance for peace, but she declines. Mirana then set forth her chosen champion alice to battle the jabberwocky. After alice slays the jabberwock, she reclaims her crown and banishes iracebeth and the knave to the outlands. It is also to note that alice referenced "six impossible things before breakfast" twice in the film. The six impossible things are:.

The Queen of Hearts

“but i don’t want to go among mad people,” alice remarked. “oh, you can’t help that,” said the cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad. ”“how do you know i’m mad?” said alice. “you must be,” said the cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here. ”the cheshire cat is one of the most interesting characters in the book. With its ability to appear and disappear whenever he wants. This makes him a bit of a smug even in the presence of the king and queen of hearts. It is a large, grinning cat that seems to answer questions in circles based on its interaction with alice.

The red queen herself made no specific appearance, but she and the queen of hearts may had been merged into one entity. The white king himself claimed that the red chess pieces were under the queen's command, despite the red king being the one who had the white queen beheaded and who alice fought, supporting the fact that she may be part of the queen of hearts.

It’s fair to say that queen of hearts is a fictional character. She is the adored daughter and the loving mother. Queen of hearts impresses with her affection, beauty, idealism and magnetism. Queen of hearts has supernatural powers. For example, she is able to heal wounds. She has a passion for playing croquet.

In the original promo and the twenty minute preview, the red queen wore a much more revealing outfit than she did in the actual premiere. In most adaptations of lewis carrol 's novels, she is usually merged or confused with the queen of hearts. In this series, like the original, they are two different characters, cora being the queen of hearts and anastasia being the red queen.

The queen in alice's flashback. Pris witless found alice a place at the houndsditch home for wayward youth , where she received therapy from dr. Bumby. However, this only encouraged alice's guilt surrounding her family's death to return, which allowed the red queen to revive, among other things. Although much diminished, the queen of hearts was no longer dead, and still held a tenuous grasp on her domain of queensland. Unable to regain control of wonderland, and still very weak, she fiercely wanted to be left alone. However, based on caterpillar 's advice, alice was determined to get the queen's help in stopping the infernal train.

From Queen of Hearts to Red Queen in 150 years

By d&cfilm alice in wonderland has a place in the hearts of devon and cornwall cinemaphiles, what with one of the locations being antony house, torpoint. For the run up to the dvd release, we got our hands on some alice in wonderland interviews. This time helena bonham carter talks about what it is to be the red queen.

Her appearance in the tim burton live-action movies is heavily based on depiction of queen elizabeth the first of england. She is a combination of the red queen, the duchess and the queen of hearts from lewis carroll's novels.

During alice's journey through the pale realm, she became entangled in the eternal conflict between white and red kingdoms when she stumbled upon a red troupe abducting the white queen. The white king bargained with alice; in return for her services, he promised a part of the powerful eye staff , a requirement to breach an otherwise impenetrable curtain of souls and access queen of hearts land.

Ilosovic stayne, also known as the knave of hearts, is the red queens right hand. He is the one who leads her army and executes all of her orders no matter how absurd or impossible her whims might be. In fact, he is extremely loyal to his queen. Related: alice in wonderland: 10 things everyone missed about the white queen.

Despite her never-ending threats, the characters in wonderland always seem to evade execution. The gryphon tells alice “they never executes nobody, you know. ”according to lewis carroll: “i pictured to myself the queen of hearts as a sort of embodiment of ungovernable passion—a blind and aimless fury. ”.

The red queen 's castle is built from stone with prominent red heart accents, the same color scheme as the queen of hearts card. It has many heart-shaped hedges and it also has gardens with many red roses and hedges cut into the shape of the red queen herself. There are many heart-shape designs outside and inside the castle. After the red queen's reign ended, she was banished to the outlands, and the castle fell to ruin.

The queen of hearts has a very psychotic personality. All the residents of wonderland are mad (insane) in some way, but the queen of hearts is the most dangerous of them all by being the ruler of the land. She is very egotistical, as she likes to hear the words "yes, your majesty" and insists that "all ways are her ways!" she is also shown to be a rather childish character, even in the face of alice, as she is incredibly impatient, irrationally sensitive, prone to temper tantrums and, as stated above, rather egotistical.

In Once Upon a Time and Once Upon a Time in Wonderland

The white queen is rude and prideful, taking delight in humiliating her students, and abusing her authority over them. She cannot stand it when she is not addressed by her full title and will get vengeful over it. Interacting with the white queen is only made more difficult by the fact that she is a wonderlandian and thus prone to oddness. One noted peculiarity of hers is that she tends to stare off into the distance when asked something, even after she has acknowledged the question itself. For the shannon hale books, she appears in the storybook of legends and lizzie's story in, "once upon a time. ".

It has been 150 years since the publication of "alice's adventurers in wonderland" by lewis carroll, affectionately known to most people simply as "alice in wonderland. Audiences continue to fall in love with its eccentric characters and unpredictable plot, but perhaps what makes the story timeless more than anything else are the delightful things that carroll and his characters say.

apr 20, 2016 i think alice's adventures in wonderland is genuinely one of the greatest stories ever told and its a shame to have seen tim burton slaughter it like he did. As always he puts his gothic spin on things which is great most of the time, but in this case its really not great at all because i don't think wonderland has room for a gothic spin. He retains most of the whimsy and colour, but dabbles in a different corner of surrealism that isn't fit for the story and it ruins it. There's no heart or excitement whatsoever and some of it is just bizarre, and not in a good way.
