Alfred hitchcock, the fabled “master of suspense,†called psycho a prank.
In fact, it was revolutionary. The film shocked audiences with its infamous 45-second “shower scene,†a heart-stopping sequence after which nothing would ever look the same. Premiered on june 16, 1960, psycho broke taboos and cinematic convention. Hitchcock was coming off of north by northwest, a romantic thriller with marquee idols cary grant and eva marie saint, shot in the widescreen vistavision format and marked by its astonishing action sequences. His follow-up was a black-and-white horror film in which he kills off the apparent lead character—janet leigh’s marion crane—not long into the film. Worse, she gets stabbed to death while taking a shower in the creepy bates motel, managed by norman bates, played by anthony perkins, whose performance as a cross-dressing, mother-obsessed, split-personality maniac would shadow every big-screen serial killer to come.
Before his collaboration with hitchcock, bernard herrmann had written several scores for radio and film. He worked with orson welles in the mercury theatre; he wrote the music for "the war of the worlds" and, later, "citizen kane. " herrmann's music was also heard on dozens of television programs, including "the twilight zone.
" he died in 1975, just after completing the score to "taxi driver. " but perhaps his most enduring and best-known work was done with alfred hitchcock, and bernard herrmann's score for "psycho" has come to epitomize suspense and terror.
Before freddy krueger, before halloween, before silence of the lambs, there was norman bates in alfred hitchcock's 1960 classic, psycho. He was the boy next door, a motel manager slash transvestite slash serial killer — with emphasis on the slash. Oh, and yes, he mummified his mother. Just a third of the way into the movie, hitchcock has norman — dressed as his mother — pull back the shower curtain and cut poor marion crane to bits in room no.

‘psycho’ is a 1960’s classic horror movie, directed by alfred hitchcock. It was known to be the scariest horror movie of its time, making people feel shocked, disgusted and mentally disturbed. The film is about a young woman, named marion, who steals $40,000 from her employees client and goes on the run so that her and her lover may be together. In doing so, marion stays at the “bates motel†a motel that is off the main road, is hard to see and has no one else staying there. The film becomes intense when the runner of the motel, norman bates, becomes a main character and is found to be under the domination of his mother, causing problems for marion.

28 minutes it’s quite easy for someone to enjoy film. Loving film is completely different. For those who see film enjoy them, yet only those who can read film truly love it and understand it as an art form. Hitchcock is probably the most well known director of all time. There is no absolute answer to what his crowning achievement is. A lot of critics prefer “vertigoâ€. Taste varies from one film lover to the other. “north by northwestâ€, “notoriousâ€, “vertigoâ€, “rear windowâ€, “the birdsâ€, “shadow of a doubtâ€, “strangers on a trainâ€, “rebeccaâ€, “suspicionâ€, “the 39 steps†and “psycho†are among his most loved. The truth is there is no such thing as one ultimate hitchcock masterpiece, there are only favorites.
78/52 is available on dvd and on bfi player now you’ll never look at the shower scene the same way again, says filmmaker alexandre o. Philippe, whose new documentary, 78/52, lays bare the nuts-and-bolts artistry of that scene from hitchcock’s psycho (1960). The doc’s title refers to the total number of camera setups (78) and cuts (52) in the scene, which itself lasts a mere 45 seconds. It took a whole week to film (a third of the film’s shooting schedule), and it was, as the new film shows, something of an obsession for the master of suspense.
Director alfred hitchcock's classic 1960 thriller psycho contains one of the best and most famous twist endings of all time, and we examine it in detail. Hitchcock's resume is stacked with incredible films, but psycho might just be his most famous, and probably the one even people who don't generally watch older horror movies are most likely to have seen. This is partially due to psycho spawning a franchise, with anthony perkins returning to play norman bates in three sequels. Psycho has also had a more recent pop culture presence thanks to a&e's acclaimed series bates motel.
