trey this is a fantastic review; very true and honest about gone with the wind. There were two points that i was waiting for you to mention though. The first being that one night when rhett carries his vaguely struggling wife up the stairs to rape her, and right before that when he also calls her out on her habit a sipping some brandy before going to bed (earlier too, when he’s courting her and she tries to wash her mouth out with cologne to disguise the scent of brandy).
The movement to delete elements from society because people either disagree with or are offended, familiarly referred to as “cancel culture†has officially kicked into high gear. From lego to your favorite cartoons and hit tv shows like cops and live pd, and classic movies such as gone with the wind, it seems nothing is safe.
Rhett butler and scarlett o'hara had a whirlwind romance and i like many believe they truly were in love with each-other ( always&forever) and the only ones for one another. Rhett said " i knew you were the one ( only woman) for me since i first laid eyes on you at twelve oaks" - and even before that on the road to tara together he confessed that he loved her and that they belong together both of them being so much alike. Which is so true. Scarlett didn't marry her first two husbands out of love, she married one out of jealousy the other for money. Rhett is her true love and as she says at the end " i do love you rhett i was just too stupid before not to realize i do" (paraphrased). She had a stupid southern-belle school girl crush on ashley wilkes and only thought she loved him. But she didn't love him truly and he didn't love her back. That is the tragedy of the movie- by the time she realizes she is deeply in love with rhett like she too had been since she danced with him at the atlanta bazaar ( in my opinion) - he was so depressed from their daughter bonnie dying and melanie wilkes dying that he needed to get away - in my opinion for a awhile. I do believe that they found happiness again. After all i don't believe they got a divorce, they were still married when he left, he just was again depressed and fed up/ caught up in the moment. She was still his wife. Another proof that they are truly meant for each-other is that they were always there for each-other and were sorry for the things they said that hurt one another. Also their marriage was passionate and lasted ( i don't believe her other two would have even if her husbands had lived). Even though he forced himself upon her that one evening- i believe scarlett after a few moments gave in because she knew she wanted to have passionate sex with him and she was very happy the next morning. Rhett i don't believe really wanted a divorce either and was all the while being hypocritical about one thing himself " god help the man who truly loves you"-when that man was rhett himself-even his friend belle watling said "rhett you're poisoned with her- you are madly in love with her i can tell" ( paraphrased). After london i think they were testing each-other when they should have been happy together with their daughter and even-though out of her stubborn southern-belle stupid mouth came the words " you know i don't want this child and i wish it was anybody's but yours!" (paraphrased) - she wanted to have that baby, i believe in her bed she is even calling out for rhett after her miscarriage. Rhett felt terrible about her fall, was crying even - that's true love. They both said things in the heat of the moment they didn't mean at all. The fact remains the tragedy of their true love for one another, and scarlett not realizing she deeply loves rhett at a sooner date and time in their marriage. But as she said " after all tomorrow is another day". And i believe that " tomorrow" brought them back together and with the happiness and peace of mind they finally deserved- with eachother.
It’s a good job they’re putting this ravishing new print of ‘gone with the wind’ in cinemas now – before steve mcqueen’s ‘12 years a slave’ arrives in january to show us what american slavery really looked like. Its stereotype of happy slaves and kindly masters has never been more wince-inducing (the writers thankfully deleted the novel’s pro-ku klux klan references). But no one watches ‘ gone with the wind gift ideas gone with the wind coffee mug unique gone with the wind gifts ’ for historical accuracy. What keeps us coming back is four-hours of epic romance in gorgeous technicolor.

“all great literature (and all great storytelling) has two elements: conflict and resolution. â€dr. B already had my attention, but when he started in on this, i couldn’t wait to hear more. I was sitting in the first class meeting of my first graduate class, and i couldn’t believe that i hadn’t began working on my master’s degree sooner.
This was where i belonged. This was where i felt connected to people like me. This was the place that i could finally talk seriously about books.
Though it initially belongs to rhett, the gun he gives scarlett upon her escape from atlanta symbolizes scarlett’s own strength and ability to stand on her own. Rhett first gives scarlett the gun before leaving her and the other women alone in enemy territory, confident that scarlett will be able to take care of herself with.

The 1939 epic stars british icon vivien leigh as heroine scarlett o'hara and clark gable as her lover rhett butler in the iconic tear-jerker. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time and at the time won a record eight academy awards. The original ending features a heart-broken scarlett resolving to move on with her life after being left by rhett.
Disclaimer: i own nothing in regard to gwtw author's notes: i got into a discussion with another reader about rhett's behavior after they got married. I made the comment that: rhett was always a jerk to scarlett. He should have been a lot nicer to scarlett. The other reader said: if rhett had been nice to scarlett, she would not even have known he was there. He had to be mean just to get her attention. I thought about that comment a lot and decided to write this story. If one looks at rhett's actions with the knowledge he was frustrated and angry with living with the woman he loved who didn't know he existed except as a checkbook his actions are understandable. At the end of the novel rhett is a numb, broken man. What he says at the end of the novel is what he is feeling right then but i believe with time and being away from the situation he could heal and want to heal his relationship with scarlett.
All there is to know about "the crying game" : say with me, "frankly, my dear" alternative character interpretation : nearly the whole cast can fall under this. Scarlett is one of the most enigmatic characters of cinema and literature. Some can't decide whether she's the designated hero or a villain protagonist. Notably while she's a selfish and manipulative jerkass to a lot of people, she cares deeply for rhett, ashley and melanie. Even jealous at melanie ending up with ashley, she still helps deliver mellie's baby and drive her all the way from atlanta to tara. She's also the ultimate pragmatist - and most of her actions in part 2 are done out of motivation to help tara, rotten though some of them may be. Some even go an extra step and claim that scarlett suffers from histrionic personality disorder.
Story[ change | change source ] scarlett o'hara is a spoiled, beautiful, histrionic young southern woman living in georgia in the year 1861. In this time, who a woman marries is very important to the rest of her life, and scarlett loves only one man. His name is ashley wilkes. Unfortunately, scarlett finds out that ashley is going to marry a woman named melanie hamilton, his own cousin. During a barbecue at ashley's plantation named twelve oaks, with all the families in the area, news arrives that a war between the northern and southern parts of the united states has begun. Before scarlett lets ashley marry melanie, she decides to tell him how she really feels. While the women nap to before the upcoming party that evening, scarlett slips down and waits for ashley to come out of the "meeting" the men are having about the war.
