the horror genre has been in a serious renaissance for the past few years, and is showing no signs of slowing down. Plenty of unique horror flicks have arrived in theaters, resulting in critical and box office success.
Chief among them is andy muschietti's pair of it movies, which both made a ton of money during their theatrical run. Given the success of both the first movie and it chapter two, fans have been wondering if pennywise might return in a spinoff. And writer gary dauberman thinks there's definitely more story to tell.
It, often capitalized as "it", was the main antagonist in stephen king 's it. It was an ancient entity that would awake about every 27 years in derry, maine to cause chaos and feed on people's fear. Its choice victims are usually children. It claimed that it was an eternal entity that was superior to all inhabitants on earth. It was assumed to have come from the macroverse where both the turtle and the other reside. Its favorite form on earth was pennywise the dancing clown (a. K. A robert gray) and the closest and truest form was that of a gigantic pregnant spider. From the spider "the loser's club" deduced that it was female (based on its ability to reproduce). Upon staring into the deadlights, audra, (bill's wife) thinks: "oh dear jesus. It is female.
".
Warning: the article contains potential spoilers for it and its upcoming sequel. Pennywise the dancing clown is terrifying enough by himself (it-self?), thanks in no small part to actor bill skarsgård's fiendish portrayal in it.
While he manages to have a fair amount of screen time traumatizing the losers' club, the actor reveals one scene in particular was cut from the final edit, in part because of its especially gruesome nature.
During the opening credits, we see pictures of the "lucky seven" from their childhood like in a photo album. The final photo of the paramount cinema segues into the actual one in derry. The camera pulls back from the title it, and it turns from white to red. In pt 2, the final photo of a hotel segues into the one the "lucky seven" are staying at. At the end of both parts, pennywise's laugh is heard.
Ready to celebrate halloween season with one of horror’s biggest icons ? if your answer is yes, then the folks at mondo are about to make you very happy. This year they’ve got some very cool new limited edition products featuring pennywise the dancing clown from stephen king’s it. The force of evil that terrorized derry, maine, for generations can now be yours in the form of three very spooky tiki mugs. If you use it to house a beverage of the right potency, as pennywise likes to say, “you’ll float too!â€.
In batman: arkham asylum, we get a chance to read the joker’s patient file, which lacks a “precise psychological diagnosis†and adds that, “his past is unknown; conflicting, unconfirmed reports state that he was a failed comedian, a petty thief, and a broken family man. †in recorded patient interviews, a doctor mentions a past “multiple personality disorder†diagnosis, a reference to the joker’s “super-sanity†diagnosis in grant morrison’s original arkham asylum graphic novel, which offered an explanation for why his personality flits between goofy and sinister depending on the interpretation. The joker (mark hamill) then lies about his childhood, claiming, “i was born in a small fishing village. I always wanted to join the circus, but my father wouldn’t really let me. †later, when he says, “i hate small confined spaces, reminds me of my childhood,†well, that might have some merit, actually. Asked if he’s lying, he says, “who knows? i certainly don’t. †us neither!.
Of all the great horror characters of the 1980s, none are more famous than freddy krueger. Created by wes craven and played by robert englund in seven nightmare on elm street movies, krueger's origin story is concisely described in the first movie: "the bastard son of a thousand maniacs. " freddy's poor mom was accidentally locked in an asylum, where she was repeatedly raped by inmates, one of the them fathering freddy. Abused and tormented as a child, freddy returned to his hometown of springwood as a young man and set about kidnapping and murdering dozens of children. After he was freed by police on technicality, krueger was burned alive by the parents of his victims, but was of course reborn as the dream-inhabiting, razor-fingered, wise-cracking horror icon.
Things were never going to be easy for frederick charles krueger. As chronicled in a nightmare on elm street 3: dream warriors , his mother, amanda krueger, was better known by her chosen name, sister mary helena. As a nun, she worked at the hathaway house, an asylum for the criminally deranged. A few days before christmas 1941, amanda found herself the victim of a merry mix-up. She was locked inside the building when the guards went home for the long weekend, leaving the high-security hospital unattended, as is customary during the holidays. By the time she was found, she'd suffered a series of horrendous attacks at the hands of the inmates and was pregnant with "the bastard son of 100 maniacs. ".
Part of what makes pennywise so terrifying in it is the mystery that shrouds the character. The origin of the demonic entity known as "it" — which typically presents itself as the shape-shifting, dancing clown before chowing down on the children who live in derry, me — is actually pretty trippy if you've read stephen king's 1986 novel.
Sihl on tumblr something unexpected has begun showing up on my tumblr dashboard: people are attracted to pennywise the dancing clown from it—the demonic monster who eats children—and pennywise has become an object of fan adoration. Affection for villains is hardly a new or unexpected turn in the wild and ranging world of fandom. The biggest “ship†to emerge from star wars: the force awakens, for example, paired up kylo ren, who murdered his father han solo on-screen, with general hux, who callously massacred an entire planetary system with the starkiller base superweapon. It’s hard to go on tumblr without seeing artwork of them snuggling and hanging out with hux’s cat, millicent.
One of the most interesting parts of this year’s remake of stephen king’s it (besides the film’s colossal box-office success ) is seeing how new filmmakers tackle an immensely popular book with a very complicated, exceedingly bizarre mythology. (“there’s this cosmic turtle god named maturin, see? which brings us to the tween orgy …â€) comparisons between an early version of the it script co-written by cary fukunaga, who was initially attached to direct, and the film itself suggest the movie cut out several scenes, including a flashback to pennywise as a saloon piano player in 1879. No such scene exists in the new it, but bill skarsgard’s episode of variety’s playback podcast reveals that the actor shot a flashback scene , sadly excised from the film, that provides some telling clues about his villain. Specifically, what pennywise might have looked like before he realized clowns are the go-to form for an interdimensional child-consuming demon.
Wiz: demons. Monsters. Fear incarnate. In the universe, only these 2 strike as much fear as they do. Boomstick: and today, we're gonna make em fight to the death! pennywise, the dancing clown and eater of worlds. Wiz: and the slender man, the faceless, well-dressed horror. Boomstick: he's wiz and i'm boomstick! wiz: and it's our job to analyse their weapons, armour and skills to find out who would win a death battle.
Hey, i never read the book but was wondering if there was any insight to this. I've read all about the origin of it and the whole turtle thing- however, was wondering if there was more significance to it taking on pennywise? like was he a clown in derry that it killed and assumed the form of? i figured there was some sort of hidden backstory with the circus caravan in the cistern. I know stephen king made the choice for it to be a clown bc of children but was hoping if there was actual pennywise backstory.
By andy scott /sept. 15, 2017 1:05 pm edt/updated: sept. 9, 2019 4:32 pm edt the creepy thriller it has already managed to scare millions of moviegoers in a very short amount of time, due in great part to its portrayal of the murderous and nightmarish clown, pennywise. But, this being hollywood, the actor behind all that scary clown makeup is actually really gorgeous and far more famous than you might have originally thought.
You may not think much of it, but you may want to take another look at the portrait. It may hold a big clue about pennywise the clown's origin. What's up with the creepy portrait? in the movie, ben reads up on the history of derry, maine. About an hour into the film, the gang heads to ben's house where he gives them a small lesson on the history of the town.
Bill skarsgård as pennywise in it (2017), a film adaptation of stephen king's novel. New line cinema in his books king explored almost every terror-producing theme imaginable, from vampires, rabid dogs, deranged killers, and a pyromaniac to ghosts, extrasensory perception and telekinesis, biological warfare, and even a malevolent automobile. In his later fiction, exemplified by dolores claiborne, king departed from the horror genre to provide sharply detailed psychological portraits of his protagonists, many of them women, who confront difficult and challenging circumstances. Though his work was sometimes disparaged as undisciplined and inelegant, king was a talented storyteller whose books gained their effect from realistic detail, forceful plotting, and the author’s undoubted ability to involve and scare the reader. His work consistently addressed such themes as the potential for politics and technology to disrupt or even destroy an individual human life. Obsession , the forms it can assume, and its power to wreck individuals, families, and whole communities was a recurring theme in king’s fiction, driving the narratives of christine, misery, and needful things.

Pennywise is, of course, not really a clown. Instead, he's actually an ancient, unimaginable horror from a dimension called the macroverse. Although it: chapter two didn't get much into the cosmology of the series, there was one scene that definitely stood out in this regard. When beverly marsh visits her old home, she finds a creepy old woman named mrs. Kersh. She finds a photo of a man who looks like pennywise, and mrs. Kersh talks about how her father was in the circus. There's some question as to whether pennywise was ever really a person, as he does take the form of his victims, but don't feel sympathy for who pennywise was when he was a person, as they're simply illusions created by it in order to frighten its prey.
Ad – content continues below the adaptation of stephen king’s novel wasn’t the only frightening figure to emerge from the clown car in recent memory. American horror story: cult featured masked terrorists with lipstick, grease paint and big red noses turning the tide of the election to put a prankster in office. In 2016, news and social media exploded into a full-fledged “clown panic,†as reports of people disguised as evil clowns showed up in the united states and canada. It had already been happening in england when a clown stalked northampton in 2013. The british press passed it off as a publicity stunt, but by august 2016 copycat clowning spread to greenville, south carolina, and green bay, wisconsin. In our original report on the professional clown industry , filmed at a 2017 clowns-only screening of it, we uncovered a rift developing between the public and honest, hardworking clowns.

the 1990 miniseries adaptation of stephen king’s it has aged considerably since its debut. Watching it now, it very much feels like a tv movie, and a lot of the performances from the child actors feel stiff and unconvincing. And yet, the film still has the power to scare, due to some genuinely creepy moments, and of course, tim curry’s iconic performance as pennywise the clown.
There were always plans for the new film “it†to get a sequel — the stephen king adaptation tells only the first half of the story of seven kids from derry, maine, who do battle with the dancing clown pennywise. But with “it†far surpassing box-office expectations, analysts are already whispering one of hollywood’s most-beloved words: franchise. King’s 1986 novel “it†weighs in at more than 1,100 pages, and has already inspired a 1990 tv miniseries starring tim curry as pennywise. The novel may have enough material to inspire more adaptations — and not just on the big screen.
