While each discipline can be highly effective—and top fighters often blend multiple styles—which primary fighting background is most successful in mma lacks a definitive answer.

Throughout the evolution of the ufc and other "no holds barred" fighting series, mma has weeded out ineffectual martial arts and kept the most effective. You won't see many aikido masters in mma, because it hasn't proven itself in a real-world scenario. It also beats out krav maga because of the extreme training it takes to be a successful mma fighter, and because of how it merges  various practices together into a cohesive whole. A successful mma fighter typically knows boxing (or muay thai), wrestling (or judo) and jiu jitsu.

It focuses on threat neutralization, efficiency of movement, and brutal effectiveness.
Find krav maga classes near me first developed in the 1930s by a jewish boxer and wrestler as a way to defend his neighbors against violence by fascist and anti-semitic groups, krav maga has since become the official combat style of the israel defense forces. Unlike the disciplined approach of eastern martial arts, this fighting style incorporates no real etiquette or fighting patterns, instead relying on continuous motion that rarely allows an attacker to rest.
If bruce lee is not your thing, then how about steven seagal? yep, that’s right – seagal is a genuine aikido master who spent many years training in japan to perfect his skills.
Whilst it might look quite simple, it is extremely useful in terms of self-defence. Founded by morihei ueshiba, the name translates as ‘the way of unifying life energy’. It uses body movement to avoid an attackers initial blow along with re-direction of their force to nullify it. Aikido also incorporates joint locks and takedowns to be a complete martial arts system.

The national sport of thailand is similar to kickboxing, but unlike its close relative, blows below the belt, elbows and knees are all legal. Like many martial arts, it’s unclear exactly when muay thai was born, mainly because many of its elements are common in both japanese and indian counterparts. It gained huge popularity in thailand in the late 1800s, but has seen a significant surge in popularity across the world in the last decade. The sport traditionally was very structured, with fighters performing strict, choreographed displays of respect before each bout. More recently, it has become focused on the body’s many weapons, including fists, feet, shins, knees, and more, to defeat an opponent. Muay thai is valuable because it teaches its followers that almost every body part can be a weapon.

Taekwondo is a distinctively korean martial art, which effectively balances both self-defense and attack, as a way of sport and physical fitness exercising. Its set of fighting moves focuses on high kicks and quick hand movements.
