Determining the most popular martial arts in the world is a tricky task. Although some martial arts have representative bodies working to select national martial arts teams, individual registration numbers are often unknown. So, when we decided to rank the top 5 martial arts in the world, we chose ‘interest’ as the decisive indicator.
This means we looked at which martial arts people search for most often. To be clear, this interest measurement does not take into account tv audience data, participant registration data or any other comparative data. Instead, we focused solely on search data.
Editor green (anthropology, texas a&m univ. ) and 41 contributors have put together an introduction to nearly 100 martial arts from all over the world. The result is not a comprehensive overview, but it does give the reader a glimpse into martial arts beyond the familiar karate and kung fu. Some articles present a nation's or region's martial arts (philippines and africa, for example); others focus on specific martial arts, ranging from the well-known (karate, judo, fencing) to the not-so-known (silat, capoeira, kali, naginata-do) to the historical (dueling, medieval swordsmanship) to philosophical topics (religion and spiritual development, social uses of martial arts). The articles are an uneven mix of scholarly research and popular topics, and many are dryly academic. Martial arts experts will notice some errors and evidence of bias in several articles, but overall this is a useful introduction for martial arts practitioners and general readers. Libraries with a martial arts collection and larger public libraries should acquire this. Katharine l. Kan, allen cty. P. L. , fort wayne, in.
In boxing , jiu-jitsu , karate , kickboxing , kung fu , mma , muay thai , other , taekwondo , wrestling in our extensive analyses of both martial arts and combat sports we have talked about a lot of different aspects, mostly concerning the technical and competitive aspects of different martial arts and combat sports. You have – we hope – managed to learn a lot and we shall certainly continue to inform you, but we have decided to dedicate today’s article to the 10 most popular martial arts and combat sports in the world. We have ranked them according to several different criteria and these are the 10 we consider to be the most popular globally.
When people think of martial arts, they most likely picture the most popular forms such as kung-fu, karate, judo, and jiu-jitsu. While the popularity of these martial arts is widespread throughout the world, thanks in large part to movies and television, they are fairly recent in the history of martial arts.
Literally meaning thai boxing, muay thai is an art that features a combination of striking techniques and clinching. It is also called “the art of eight limbs†as fighters use not only punches and kicks but also elbows, knees and shins to fight each other. It is thailand’s national sport and has been steadily rising in popularity since the 1800. Back then it took the sport world by storm, as it did away with the mystical, spiritual aspect of martial arts, and instead focused on taking down your enemy quickly and efficiently.

Japan is the home of karate, one of the most popular martial arts today. Unlike other forms that focus on a single body part or form of combat, karate incorporates the whole body. Punching, kicking, elbows, throws, and open handed "knife strikes" are all staples of the form. Credit: getty.
Wing chun is a chinese martial art with specialization in close-range combat and made popular by yip man /ip man. The system emphasizes close-range rapid attacks in succession and places heavy emphasis on hand trapping. Because it is a "southern style" chinese martial art, wing chun places heavy emphasis on fist and palm strikes, as opposed to "northern style" chinese martial arts, which emphasize kicking more. Wing chun practitioners can often been seen practicing on wooden dummies to improve their skills. I took some wing chun in my early 20s and currently use some of the hand trapping techniques in sparring. Some of the techniques are definitely effective. The problem i foresee with wing chun in a street fight is that the system places too much emphasis on linear movement. Linear movement in a street fight can actually be a hindrance because your opponent will most likely also fight linearly---thereby making it a fight of attrition and giving your opponent a puncher's chance.
Martial arts training in wing chun kung fu style on a wooden dummy in the training gym or dojo wing chun is a style of kung fu that has gained huge popularity in recent years, largely due to the success of the ip man movies starring donnie yen. The actual origins of wing chun are open to debate but according to wingchunmasters. Com.

20 d 1) karate is the most popular martial art in the world karate is one of the striking martial arts that heavily emphasizes self-defense and counter-striking your opponent. Kicks, punches and a wide, strong stance are staples of karate, along with a deep spiritual practice. In the 19th century, the father of modern karate, gichin funakoshi, explained that the main purpose of karate is to perfect the self. In fact, in one of his 20 precepts, he states, “spiritual development is paramount; technical skills are merely a means to an end. †from this, it’s clear that karate should be interpreted as a spiritual practice first and a physical practice second.
History: also known as jujutsu, jujitsu, and pretty much every other phonetic variation, this is one of the oldest surviving forms of japanese martial arts. Dating back to the late 1400s, this fighting system was actually developed for battlefield use , to be brought into the fray when weapons were unavailable or ineffective. Relying heavily upon throws, immobilizing, choking, and joint locks, jiu-jitsu became an especially important and effective form of combat as armored battle fell out of favor in the 17th century. This fighting style would go on to become one of the all-time most popular martial arts in the modern day, thanks in large part to the brazilian style, developed by the gracie brothers, and its use in mixed martial arts around the world. If you’ve ever watched a match in the octagon and saw someone win by submission, chances are they are using jiu-jitsu.

The two main surviving forms now are japanese – which is geared more toward unsanctioned self defense and has many sub-styles – and brazilian – which is much more competition-focused and nearly entirely based on the gracie method.

Director: wei lo | stars: bruce lee , nora miao , james tien , maria yi votes: 26,010 | gross: $1. 29m i know its cliche to have one of bruce lee's films at the top, but who can argue with his impact? seriously. There were martial arts films before him sure, however he is the sole reason the genre exploded in the 70's, and well after his death to even today and for many more years to come, he broke down racial barriers and became the first asian superstar the world has ever known, his work ethic and workout regime was ahead of its time, he founded his own form of martial arts, and came up with the concept of mixing different aspect from different forms from all over the world to make the most affective use in any situation, basically to adapt to any fighting method, which went on to of course inspire the ufc & mma in general and for that reason he is being hailed as the "father of mixed martial arts" and his impact on popular culture is incredible, especially with just 4 completed kung fu films under his belt. Bruce lee is the king of kung fu cinema and is arguably the greatest martial artist of the 20th century. He is a philosopher, a teacher, a director, a writer, an actor, a martial artist, an inspiration, a family man, and a legend. Its safe to say he influenced & inspired everyone on this list.

The five styles represented here are karate (ka), judo (ju), kendo (ken), boxing (bo), and some jiu jitsu, which didn’t go into the name. The intent was, literally, to create a street fighting martial art specifically for dirty brawling. The whole philosophy is one of effectiveness and survival, leaving no room for cute flourishes or “honorable†combat. This is a kill or be killed martial art that aims at being effective when you’re in an alley, not a dojo. Eye gouging, groin punishment, ear tearing, finger breaking, and joint mauling are encouraged.
