Share tweet submit pin welcome to paste’s 80 best movies of the 1980s. This list takes into account what the critics and audiences of the time could not—the lasting ripple effects of iconic performances, influential direction and pop-culture sweet spots, as well as some simply overlooked gems. That said, a great performance or popular endearment isn’t necessarily enough. The films on this list must be good, solid examples of their respective genre (and in some cases, the template for said genre).
The 80s were a decade of fast change—fashion, music, political climate. Just about everything changed, including film and movies. This decade bred some of the most loved and celebrated movies of all time. This is why we’re dedicating a whole category to the decade and featuring the best of the 80s movies on dvd!.
Ah, romantic comedies. The genre is often criticized (and for good reason) for a host of issues—like giving fans unrealistic expectations about relationships and continuing problematic stereotypes , not to mention the overwhelming lack of diversity. Rom-coms should be held to a higher standard; after all, these movies are continually watched and rewatched by millions every day. A recent poll on glamour's instagram revealed that 88% of our readers love rom-coms. What's disheartening, though, is that 61% of those fans said they've referred to them as "guilty pleasures.

Welcome to camp rotten! we’ve got lakes for skinny dipping, necronomicons for candle-lit reading, and your esteemed camp counselors: a finer breed of spurned psychos, unstable writers, and sarcastic undead you’ll never meet. It was the decade that gave the world the maverick new hollywood drama, the nixon-era paranoid thriller, the slasher flick, the all-star disaster movie, the gross-out comedy and the modern mega-blockbuster. But the seventies were particularly kind to one specific cul-de-sac of cinema: the science fiction film, a subset category that was still buzzing from its late-sixties head-trip phase courtesy of 2001: a space odyssey. As the age of aquarius slowly slid into the beginning of the nation’s watergate-and-disco period, you could still find sci-fi movies that wanted to blow an audience’s possibly addled, probably enhanced mind. But by the end of the 1970s, it was possible to have checked out postapocalyptic action-adventures, future-shock case studies, technophobic nightmares, low-budget exploitation movies about what-if scenarios and big-budget space operas — all of which fell under the s. F. Umbrella and helped turn the genre into a gamechanger. And the influences of this period are still showing up in theaters near you.
Ever since cinema was invented in 1895, it's interesting to note that action-laden movies have been in the minds of early filmmakers, even during the silent film era. Who could ever forget one of the very first successful narrative films, 1903's "the great train robbery," directed by edward s. Porter? by the title alone, you would know that this silent film classic belonged to the action genre. Plus it's a western to boot! prior to this film, others made very short movies that showed "safe scenes" or those scenes that really didn't require much effort to put together much less shoot. Imagine shooting an action film outdoors, with a huge camera that only exposes the film strip in merely seconds. And porter was able to use editing techniques and shooting styles modern filmmakers still use today. That 12-minute film is short by today's standards, but it was a long and great feat that put this action film on the map of cinematic history.

Growing up in the '90s was the best of both worlds: i had epic '80s movies to play over and over again, and i got to live through 10 years of amazing film releases, many of which have stuck with me my whole life (and are still on constant rotation).
Here are some hits and misses from the 80s! i grew up with all of these movies. While some are cheesy and horrible, others are quotable and iconic. I really hope you seek out the movies you haven't seen here. They are a perfect piece of 80s awesome!.
Seriously, have you watched any of these movies recently? the stuff that flew over our heads back in the day sticks out like a sore thumb now. Take a look at some of the most egregiously sexist and inappropriate moments from ’80s movies.

Comment siskel and ebert really hated iconic 80s horror movies. A recently unearthed clip of the duo reviewing halloween ii heaps more evidence on the fact that they really weren't into the 80s slasher genre at all. Roger ebert and gene siskel are icons in the world of movie criticism and it should be noted that they loved john carpenter's original halloween and wished that he would have been back to direct the sequel, as they both note in their review. It should also be noted that halloween ii is still a mixed bag, even for hardcore horror fans.
There are some great gangster movies out there, but only al pacino can capture the imagination in the way he did with tony montana in scarface, one of the most iconic gangsters in movie history.
As a form of art, film has a way of creating a truly lasting impression both on individuals and on our culture as a whole – whether that be with their themes, music, imagery, or (perhaps most enduringly) with their style. And while we love all of the fashion that has been ingrained in our collective consciousness from movies, we do tend to appreciate the gear just that little bit more.
As per my other "50 best romances" lists - they are alphabetically by year of release. As always i can only list movies i've seen (it would be difficult to judge ones that i haven't). These appear to be mostly comedies. No doubt that was the sort of film i was interested in watching way back then.

Think you’re a real movie buff? you might want to think again. Since the first movie studio opened in hollywood on sunset boulevard in 1911, the long-spanning history of cinema includes hundreds of classic and iconic flicks, ranging widely in genre, medium, year, heroes and villains, sound design, and set pieces—but what exactly makes them stand out? what makes them so utterly unforgettable and magnetic to audiences and their collective memories? it could be creative editing, or an unparalleled artistic force in the director’s chair. Sometimes, it’s a captivating performance from a tour-de-force talent.
“batdance†is to the purple one’s playful soundtrack as the trailer is to the movie. In this three-part album closer, prince dices and splices clips from the movie and bits of his own songs, whipping up a funky hybrid of house music and new jack swing—complete with a hair-raising, hair-metal wank solo. It’s dance-floor serious, but with all the camp, color and pow! whomp! of a 1960s dc comics panel. Yes, yes, the words you probably think of first when you think of field of dreams are, "if you build it, he will come. " those words, spoken by an unseen voice to ray kinsella (kevin costner), inspire him to plow under his iowa cornfield and build a baseball field where the spirits of dead (often scandal-plagued) baseball players can return and play again. But the moment of truth for the movie comes at the very end, when ray spots one player and recognizes him as his father. With the final words of the movie, ray musters up the courage to ask his dad to play catch. Cue the waterworks.
This sunday marks the 30th anniversary of the classic supernatural action-comedy “ ghostbusters ,†which hit theaters on friday june 8th, 1984. “valley girl†was many people’s introduction to nicolas cage. It also clued a lot of people into the culture of the san fernando valley and the whole “valley girl†thing.
