british actor henry cavill has become a household name over the past few years, in no small part due to his role as superman in the dc extended universe. Man of steel was the first installment of the property, and cavill's performance as the last son of krypton has been praised.
Recently cavill took on some more iconic roles in netflix projects as protagonist geralt in the witcher and sherlock in enola holmes. The latter movie arrived on the streaming service just last week, and cavill has explained why playing the iconic detective was more "freeing" than superman and geralt.
No other sherlock holmes a-z (and i have quite a number of them) comes even close to tracey's guide. I've owned a copy of this book under its other title, 'the encyclopaedia sherlockiana', for a number of years and wanted to get this one so i could have a "duplicate" copy. It's one of the most thumbed volumes in my holmesian library but being in paperback format (my "new" one is a hardback) has become a bit worn with the constant use i have subjected it to. This book is the ultimate sherlock holmes a-z, a must have for any serious follower of the baker street sleuth.
There are two things that the new netflix release "enola holmes" does very well. One, it proves that there is still life and originality in the sherlock holmes franchise; and, two, it cements the fact that millie bobby brown is a bona fide star. Based on the nancy springer's ya novels, "enola holmes" imagines that sherlock holmes was raised by an intellectual feminist daredevil who eschews female victorian stereotypes and passes them onto her young daughter, enola. Meanwhile, sherlock (a buttoned-up and charming henry cavill) and his cynical brother mycroft (sam claflin) have already moved on in the world, solving crimes and succeeding in the business world, respectively.
I am afraid, my dear watson, that most of your conclusions were erroneous. When i said you stimulated me i meant, to be frank, that in noting your fallacies i was occasionally guided towards the truth. After appearing as though he was agreeing with watson, gifts in gifts in sherlock holmes sherlock holmes mugs sherlock holmes gift sherlock holmes mugs sherlock holmes gift quickly contradicts watson and informs him that his theories were actually wrong. Holmes gives watson this backhanded compliment, saying that watson’s incorrect theories were not altogether useless since they led holmes to the right answers. Watson’s character gives holmes an opportunity to show off and demonstrate his superiority, a dynamic that plays out over the novella.
Colonel sebastian moran is an ex-army colonel and the right-hand man of professor james moriarty. Sherlock holmes 's miniature biography described him as the "second most dangerous man in london. ".

first appearing in print in 1887's a study in scarlet, the character's popularity became widespread with the first series of short stories in the strand magazine, beginning with "a scandal in bohemia" in 1891; additional tales appeared from then until 1927, eventually totalling four novels and 56 short stories. All but one are set in the victorian or edwardian eras, between about 1880 and 1914. Most are narrated by the character of holmes's friend and biographer dr.
John h. Watson, who usually accompanies holmes during his investigations and often shares quarters with him at the address of 221b baker street, london, where many of the stories begin.
Sherlock holmes is a private detective who conducts his work alongside dr. John watson, who is holmes’ friend, sidekick, and official chronicler. Dr. James mortimer, and later, sir henry baskerville himself, hire holmes and watson to help with the peculiar case of the supernatural baskerville hound that is murdering the few remaining baskerville family members. As both a private detective and intellectual, holmes’ reputation is world-renowned, and mortimer refers to him as the “second-highest expert in europe. †holmes, however, is also an egoist. He takes offense to mortimer’s suggestion that he might be second-best at anything. Holmes has good reasons to be confident, as he has a unique ability to solve complex mysteries using the scantest of clues—the kinds of things that ordinary people might overlook. Using only dr. Mortimer’s walking stick, for instance, holmes is able to deduce mortimer’s name, approximate age, occupation (and even his previous occupation), as well as the types of pets he owns. The detective is often able to arrive at these insights within moments of observing a scene. When holmes finds he needs more time to unravel the enigma before him, he prefers complete solitude and close quarters. However, holmes’ brilliance doesn’t come without a price. A decidedly rational man, holmes is entirely unable to understand art—though he tries, much to the dismay of watson, who is forced to listen to holmes’ nonsensical diatribes on the subject. Holmes can also be a bit of a jerk. For instance, he loves to ask watson to provide insight on clues that holmes has already figured out, simply so he can tear his friend watson down a bit when he arrives at the wrong conclusions.
John springer collectiongetty images during the heyday of the silent film era, hollywood icon john barrymore (he's drew's grandfather) portrayed sherlock on the silver screen. The mystery film, which borrows from a number of doyle's stories and includes other famous characters such as moriarty and watson, premiered in 1922, but was believed lost for decades, until it was found and restored in the 1970s.
If i had the time (and approval from my editors), i would spend approximately 1,500 words breaking down the rogue curl which undoes henry cavill in the enola holmes blooper reel. However, since i have neither the time nor approval, i’ll be brief and simply let you know that cavill’s curl is just one of the many incredible goofs, flubs, and crack-ups contained in the nearly three-minute blooper reel released by netflix on monday.
Sherlock holmes is the ever-observant, world-renowned detective of 221b baker street. For all his assumed genius and intuition he is virtually omniscient in these stories, and holmes becomes more accessible in the context of his constant posturing and pretension. Holmes lets down his guard and admits of a fragile ego. When challenged at the beginning of the book—mortimer calls him the second best crime solver in europe and holmes lets down his guard and asks who could possibly be the first. By and large, however, holmes' ego is kept in check by a constant dose of adulation from watson. Holmes regularly announces some absurd and unsubstantiated conclusion only to mock watson by revealing the most obvious of clues. In the end, holmes toys with his associates (and particularly watson) at least as much as he flouts his enemies, equivocating, misleading, and making fools out of them only to up his own crime-solving cachet.
The world has always been a strange place, and for a while, holmes thought about sharing the strangeness of the world. But he soon came to the conclusion that the people of the world were not ready to know these things. Together with a european baron with an interest in re-animation, an invisible man and the legendary dracula, among others, holmes kept the knowledge of the world's secret. He collected information in the hopes that it might one day be safe to reveal it to the world.
The main protagonist of the stories, sherlock holmes is a private detective with a knack for seeing details that many people often miss out. He is consulted by many different people throughout the various stories to help solves crimes and mysteries. He shares an apartment on 221b baker street with his close friend and companion, dr. Watson.
Evil teacher faux affably evil : moriarty always talks with a civilised, polite and gentlemanly demeanour, even when he's about to cold-bloodedly murder someone. Quite frankly, there is nothing in the film more frightening than this. For the evulz : he doesn't want to rule the world, just get filthy, stinking rich from his arms dealing during a potential world war; he does take some pretty sick pleasure from how inevitably such a conflict is, and that all he has to do is wait for it to come along. He also maliciously taunts holmes on their first proper meeting with the news that he murdered irene adler via tuberculosis.
Sherlock is a unique young man with a mind like a 'racing engine'. Without problems to solve, that mind will tear itself to pieces and the more bizarre and baffling the problems the better. He has set himself up as the world's only consulting detective, whom the police grudgingly accept as their superior.
The enola holmes cast features some big industry names, so where have you seen them before? there's a meta twist in the movie premise itself, as the title character is the younger sister of famous detective sherlock holmes and investigates her mother's disappearance. Warner bros. Originally intended to have a proper theatrical run for enola holmes but made a streaming distribution deal because of the covid-19 pandemic. The film released on netflix in september 2020.

The ace : like his victorian literary counterpart, sherlock has numerous skills, including deduction, chemistry, music and combat, with a highly regarded intellect, many of his skills contributing to his skills as a consulting detective. Unfortunately, he also has anti-social tendencies which stem from a low opinion of other people, a flaw he works to overcome over the corse of the series.
