Where did the hobbit trilogy go wrong? peter jackson's the lord of the rings movies were very obviously a labor of love. Meticulously developed over a number of years, peter jackson carried the acorn of adapting tolkien's magnum opus into live-action cinema through many hardships and navigated the challenge of selling such an ambitious project to the business brains of the industry. With the backing of new line, jackson assembled a cast that would soon etch their names into the annals of film and utilized cutting-edge filming techniques to craft a trilogy befitting in scale of tolkien's original books.

Just west of pelorus river, there are several film locations from the lord of the rings trilogy and the hobbit: an unexpected journey in the nelson tasman region. I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out i had seen the lotr trilogy. My impression then was that peter jackson had kind of gotten stuck in a groove and was reluctant to let it go. Since that time, i have learned of some disturbing information which makes any further rewatching of the hobbit impossible for me, namely, the reports of animal cruelty which occurred during filming. As i understand it 27 animals died during the shoot. So much for the "no animals were harmed" disclaimer. One pony broke its back and was not found until the following day when it was blessedly dispatched. Another horse drowned and was found with its face in the river. Due to overcrowding in the horse pens, several horses were lacerated on sharp wire resulting in torn flesh and exposed muscles. Chickens were mauled by unsupervised dogs. Mr. Jackson was advised of these occurrences but denied them and did nothing. I guess fancy special effects had become more important than care of the animals who made him so much money. I am sure that not everyone would decline to watch a movie due to unpleasant events behind the scenes, but all i could think about was animal suffering. Jmo.

The bad news is, there is no video presentation of footage from the hobbit in the offing at comic con this week. I’m not sure that anyone really thought that such a thing was likely, but with steven spielberg showing up for tintin, implying that his co-conspirator on that film, peter jackson, would be here as well, some thought there was an outside chance that mr. Jackson would take the stage in hall h to show off footage from the hobbit: an unexpected journey. But we’ll have to make do with recent pictures of many dwarfs and this new video production diary, which launched in lieu of a comic con appearance.

The Hobbit (film series)

Interestingly, ‘the hobbit’ was initially envisioned as a two part film. It was only in july, 2012 that jackson confirmed plans for a third film, turning his adaptation into a trilogy just as its predecessor. The films were a cinematic triumph but also took major artistic liberties which also tied them more directly to the ‘lord of the ring’ series. If jackson could change ‘the hobbit’ from a two part film to a trilogy, we could also hope for another part to be added to the adaption. Sadly, this does not seem like a possible option because of how the trilogy ends.

Filming [ edit ]

Excitement about the upcoming ‘hobbit’ movie has been building for years – pretty much since credits rolled ‘the return of the king’ in 2003 – but since the movie actually started filming back in january, the internet has been abuzz with rumors, speculation and fans chomping at the bit for any official pictures or information from the set. Well, over the past week, we were given our first official looks at the thirteen dwarves who comprise the main bulk of the characters of this first movie, ‘the hobbit: an unexpected journey. ’ like so many lifelong tolkien fans, i was blown away by what i saw.

June 24, 2019 reading time: 5 minutes after 3 days, 21 hours, 8 bags of popcorn, a dozen or more pee breaks, a walk in the park, and a short 8-hour nap (what, that’s a nap), i finally finished all 9 of the hobbit/lord of the rings films, back to back, extended editions, in glorious hd.

For those of you that have the original extended dvd lord of the rings boxset, and want a set that matches, this box is the one you want. They made sure to stick with the overall design of first box with the front cover and spine listing the films. The only downside to the hobbit on dvd is that the film is split on two disc, much like lotr. The blu ray does feature it on one disc, but the packaging is much better for this edition. The bluray is just a plastic blu ray case in a nice slipcase. These dvds, when opened, not only extended to roughly two feet, but here is illustrated and hand drawn artwork and maps included with each dvd. All of which are not present in any blu ray sets.

Film: a second prologue lasting nearly ten minutes take place on the day of bilbo’s “long-expected party”. While bilbo jots down in a journal his memories of his adventures with thorin & company, frodo runs about getting the mail, reminding bilbo about his party, and going off to greet the arriving gandalf. Book: no scenes taking place during the timeframe of the lord of the rings appear in the hobbit.

“all good stories deserve embellishment. ”this quote, delivered by gandalf the grey in peter jackson’s interpretation of j. R. R. Tolkien’s classic children’s book, the hobbit, acts as a warning to its viewers: this is not your grandpa’s hobbit. Along with shooting the film in revolutionary 48 frames per second (presented in 3d), the adaptation was radical in its content, hand-picking what would be included from the book, and turning sentence-long descriptions from the novel into 20 minute scenes in the film. Earlier book-to-big-screen trials of the hobbit, animated and otherwise, kept the medium in its original context: a book created for children. But jackson’s version, coming off of the steam and success of the more mature lord of the rings (lotr) series, presents a darker, adult adaptation.
