Is 'The Wolf of Wall Street' Based on a True Story?

Parents need to know that the wolf of wall street is based on the true story of a financial broker who bent the rules, became enormously wealthy, and was not caught for years. He lives a life of debauchery and excess, cheating on his wife, remarrying, and cheating on his new wife with an endless array of prostitutes. Many characters are shown having graphic sex of all types. wolf The main character uses every kind of drug under the sun, but especially prefers quaaludes; the movie spends extra time on the effects of this drug. A secondary character is also a heavy drug user. Language is very strong and constant, with "f--k" uttered nearly constantly, as well as almost every other vulgar word in the book. As for violence, there's mostly enraged shouting, but there's a bloody face-bashing scene, some domestic violence where a wife gets punched a couple of times, and a quick shot of a (very tangential) bloody suicide. The legendary martin scorsese 's the director, and most movie buffs will want to see this, but as with goodfellas and casino , this one's not recommended for kids of any age.

I had bought this for the express purpose of learning a bit more about market manipulation, short squeezes, and certain things that have been in the news lately. I recently saw an interview with the actual wolf of wall street, plus a student had mentioned this movie, so i bought it. Well, they easily could have cut this 3 hour movie down to 1 1/2 to 2 hours if they left out the gratuitous x-rated scenes. I literally had to re-look at the cover to see if i had mistakenly bought an x-rated movie. I can't imagine much more that could be added to increase the r rating to x. The debased debauchery was truly stunning, and i'm not typically perceived as a prude. Under no circumstances would i let kids watch this and i'd urge adults not to, either. Once you see something, you can't unsee it. Too bad, because i believe a better filmmaker could have related the story line and also the depths that the love of money will take a person, without having to so drastically offend normal people. I'd suggest reading a few good articles on the subject instead of watching this movie. My copy is in the trash can.

What a martin scorsese movie is cannot be precisely pinned down, of course, as he is one of the most artistically diverse and multifaceted filmmakers working today who can still be identified as an auteur. Where some great filmmakers reach a point where they stop feeling the need to challenge themselves, scorsese has never stopped evolving since he first entered the business, and it is possible there was no bigger evolution in his style than goodfellas in 1990. Hyperkinetic, and absolutely, top-to-bottom dense with music, imagery, dialogue, narration, and more plot than one would ever think could comfortably fit in a single film, scorsese struck upon a new cinematic grammar in that movie, a completely innovative way of relating the experience of the american gangster. The film never needed to make outright judgments on its characters, because by sweeping us all up in the rush of it all, allowing us to feel the full appeal and aspirational quality of this lifestyle while simultaneously seeing (and laughing at) its sheer and utter ridiculousness, the experience spoke for itself, and the deeper implications were positively searing. The influence of goodfellas on subsequent american cinema is incalculable, its stylistic tentacles spreading far and wide and heavily altering our cinematic perception of – and expectation for – crime stories. Even this year’s american hustle owes (and doesn’t try to hide) a great stylistic debt to the film.

For the wolf of wall street , his latest collaboration with leonardo dicaprio, martin scorsese forewent his signature voiceover style in favor of more direct address: throughout the movie, dicaprio, playing the lupine financial huckster jordan belfort, looks into the camera and speaks right to the audience. Terence winter, who wrote the screenplay, explains the use of the technique thusly: “ you are being sold the jordan belfort story by jordan belfort , and he is a very unreliable narrator. ”.

Anyone who needs “the wolf of wall street” to explain that the stock-market fraud and personal irresponsibility it depicts are morally wrong is dead from the neck up; but anyone who can’t take vast pleasure in its depiction of delinquent behavior is dead from the neck down. Martin scorsese’s new film, based on the autobiography of jordan belfort, a broker who made a fortune on shady sales of penny stocks—and spent a fortune on drugs, sex, and other self-indulgences—in the nineties, before going to jail for his financial crimes, is an exuberant, hyper-energized riot. It’s like mainlining cinema for three hours, and i wouldn’t have wanted it a minute shorter.

By pamela yellen | leave a comment if you haven’t seen the oscar-nominated movie, the wolf of wall street yet, i’m not necessarily suggesting you see it. It’s based on a true story of wall street’s excesses, and it’s chock-full of graphic scenes of sex, drugs and debauchery. And it’s l-o-o-o-o-o-n-g – about three hours.
