The film: the return of the king is a somewhat frustrating film for me, arguably more so than either of the previous instalments in peter jackson’s trilogy. It remains the only instalment for which the extended material is really a “make or break” situation: the theatrical version is missing two scenes so crucial to the entire trilogy that i honestly consider it a woefully inferior version in that form. Even with these vital scenes restored, however, the film leaves something to be desired as an adaptation of tolkien’s novel, skipping or glossing over important elements while expanding or inventing others which slow things down and distract from the main narrative.

Peter jackson didn't seem like the most natural pick when selecting a director for one of the most expensive and expansive film series ever created. The new zealand born filmmaker's previous works had been more wild and imaginative cult offerings, like 'braindead' (known in the states as 'dead alive') and ' the frighteners ,' not big budget special effects laden blockbusters. But fate smiled upon the tubby (at the time, at least) native, as he was given the reins to adapt the literary giant from famed author j. R. R. The Return of the King (1980 film)

The battle has been won, but what about the war?! with 'the two towers' bringing the first real full-scale battle into the film series, the ante was raised significantly, and with two films worth of build up, the pay off had to be beyond huge. Anything less than a spectacular end cap would have been a massive disaster. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The lord of the rings is one of the greatest fantasy novel of all times from english author j. R. R. Tolkien. It started basically as the sequel to a children’s story the hobbit, 1937. This was written in parts during the time of world war ii. You can easily imagine how good this novel is as this is the second best selling novel ever and has sold over 150 million copies worldwide.

I won't review the films becasue if you are thinking of buying this box set then you obviously liked them ( or whoever you are thinking of buyinh for did ). As for this box set, i loved the original theatrical releases but the the extended versions are so much better with all of the extended / additional scenes being finished to cinema quality and seamlessly slotted in, i truly wish more films were released this way ( a prime candidate being the star wars prequels or the original alien ). I know a lot of people have moaned about the fact that the film itself is split between 2 disks but come on people how hard is it to get up and change a disk, you'll probably need a quick pit stop by then anyway! and for the sake of maintaining the sound quality, well worth it. As for the extras, i usually only watch the alternate/deleted/extended scenes ( which are already part of the film in this package ) but there are so many in this box set that there is almost certainly something here for everyone and certainly far more than was available on the original theatrical dvd releases and the menu tree in the enclosed booklet is a greeat help and beautifully done.

In 1978 my family was living in boulder, colorado. One day on our way back from lunch at a pizza emporium, our brand-new amc matador dropped its transmission-literally. The damn thing fell out on pearl street. True embarrassment is standing in the middle of a busy downtown street, grinning idiotically while people examine your marooned car and the large greasy black thing lying under it. Two days later the dealership called at about five in the afternoon. Everything was jake--i could pick up the car any time. The dealership was three miles away. I thought about calling a cab but decided that the walk would be good for me. The amc dealership was in an industrial park set off by itself on a patch of otherwise deserted land a mile from the strip of fast-food joints and gas stations that mark the eastern edge of boulder. A narrow unlit road led to this outpost. By the time i got to the road it was twilight--in the mountains the end of day comes in a hurry--and i was aware of how alone i was. About a quarter of a mile along this road was a wooden bridge, humped and oddly quaint, spanning a stream. I walked across it. I was wearing cowboy boots with rundown heels, and i was very aware of the sound they made on the boards; they sounded like a hollow clock. I thought of the fairy tale called "the three billy-goats gruff" and wondered what i would do if a troll called out from beneath me, "who is trip-trapping upon my bridge?" all of a sudden i wanted to write a novel about a real troll under a real bridge. I stopped, thinking of a line by marianne moore, something about "real toads in imaginary gardens," only it came out "real trolls in imaginary gardens. " a good idea is like a yo-yo--it may go to the end of its string, but it doesn't die there; it only sleeps. Eventually it rolls back up into your palm. I forgot about the bridge and the troll in the business of picking up my car and signing the papers, but it came back to me off and on over the next two years. I decided that the bridge could be some sort of symbol--a point of passing. I started thinking of bangor, where i had lived, with its strange canal bisecting the city, and decided that the bridge could be the city, if there was something under it. What's under a city? tunnels. Sewers. Ah! what a good place for a troll! trolls should live in sewers! a year passed. The yo-yo stayed down at the end of its string, sleeping, and then it came back up. I started to remember stratford, connecticut, where i had lived for a time as a kid. In stratford there was a library where the adult section and the children's section was connected by a short corridor. I decided that the corridor was also a bridge, one across which every goat of a child must risk trip-trapping to become an adult. About six months later i thought of how such a story might be cast; how it might be possible to create a ricochet effect, interweaving the stories of children and the adults they become. Sometime in the summer of 1981 i realized that i had to write about the troll under the bridge or leave him--it--forever.

Successive generations have been spellbound by the exploits of frodo, gandalf and their comrades as they journey towards mordor to do battle with the dark lord sauron. There is something about the alluring world of elves, dwarves and old magic which has proved exceptionally popular, working on the imagination both as an enthralling adventure story and, at a deeper level, as ’a comprehensive counter-myth to the story of the 20th century’ (independent). Tolkien’s treatment of the eternal struggle between good and evil, from stirring battles (‘as good as anything in homer’, according to c. S lewis) to the conflict within every individual, is subtle, lyrical and profound.

Major themes lust for throughout the book tolkien has given instances of the corrupting influence of the ring, which represents power. It seems that everyone who possesses power is ruined by it. Even saruman, who was once a good wizard, is corrupted by it. And frodo, who is the hero, finds himself compelled by the ring. Not only.

To keep pippin out of further trouble, gandalf rides with him to minas tirith, the city that sauron's armies will soon besiege. They meet with boromir's father denethor, the ruling steward of gondor, and in gratitude for boromir's sacrifice (saving them from the orcs at parth galen), pippin pledges his service to the steward as a guard of the white tower. Denethor does not trust gandalf, and he knows that the wizard has brought aragorn to reclaim the throne. Faramir returns to the city, wearied from fighting, and reports his encounter with frodo. Angry that his son did not bring the ring to gondor, denethor sends the exhausted captain back into the field to lead a rearguard action against the oncoming army. When they make their last dash for the safety of the gates, gandalf rides out to defend them from the flying nazgûl, but faramir falls at the gates.

The association of the elves with grey cloaks went back into deep history. One of their greatest kings, thingol of doriath , was known as thingol greycloak , and from this - at least in part - came the name of his people, the sindar or grey-elves. Galadriel had dwelt in thingol's halls during the first age , and the tradition of the grey elven -cloak was continued when she settled in the land of lórien. Accounts of the elves of lórien have them cloaked in grey, and when aragorn visited galadriel's land in the years before the war of the ring , she gave him a cloak of elven -grey.

In this seminar, dr. Corey olsen – also known as the tolkien professor – will discuss the third volume of j. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure and heroism in middle-earth, the return of the king. The seminar will consist of eight sessions, meeting once per week and spending three sessions each in books v and vi, with the last two discussions focusing on the appendices.
